Corn, beans, and squash, called “the three sisters,” symbolize the agricultural know-how of the Latin American tradition.

PRE-HISPANIC FARMING PRACTICES

The ancient Indigenous farmland of Mesoamerica was a wonder to behold. The Aztec were inventive, devising a network of aqueducts and floating garden islands called chinampas, which drifted on vast lakes. The Inca worked the dry mountainous terrain by constructing complex terraces with intricate irrigation systems embedded into the landscape. Maya farmers managed dense forests for cultivation, using a prescribed fire practice now known as slash-and-burn and thereby creating plots of cropland rich with fertilizing ash. European conquistadores brimmed with envy and awe upon encountering the abundance of the land and evidence of such highly developed farming techniques.
